Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (IPP)

WHAT ARE INFLATABLE PENILE PROSTHESIS?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition many men face. It is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual performance. There is no singular cause of ED, but the most common causes include:

  • Vascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Neurological conditions
  • Medications
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Psychological causes, including stress and anxiety

ED can have a profound impact on your quality of life. It not only affects sexual intercourse but can cause changes in your self-esteem, relationships, and emotional well-being.

Penile implants

ED TREATMENT

While medications like Viagra and Cialis have been widely prescribed as a first treatment, along with other non-surgical treatments such as vacuum erection devices, these methods may not work for everyone. When other treatments haven’t been effective, penile implants may be an option.

PENIS IMPLANT BENEFITS

Penile implants offer solutions that not only address the functional aspects of ED but also prioritize the emotional and psychological health of those affected. A penile implant’s design is discreet and practically undetectable once in place.

There has been overwhelmingly positive feedback for men who have undergone the procedure. Men often report a significant improvement in their ability to enjoy intimate moments without worrying about their performance.

INFLATABLE PENILE PROSTHESIS

There are two types of penile implants, the more common of which is known as an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP). An IPP is often the preferred type of implant when a man needs an alternative option for managing erectile dysfunction. It may also help men with Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s disease is a condition where there is a formation of fibrous scar tissue within the penis, causing erections to become curved and painful.

The inflatable penile implant consists of several interconnected components that are surgically placed. They are designed to mimic the look and performance of a natural erection.

Two cylinders are inserted into the penis and linked via a tube to a saline water pouch nestled in the lower abdomen. A pump, discreetly implanted within the scrotum, activates this system. A simple squeeze on the pump fills the cylinders with saline, creating an erection. A press on a release valve deflates them, returning the penis to a natural, flaccid state. There are no visible external parts.

SEMI-RIGID RODS

The other type of penile implant is a semi-rigid rod. Made of metal wires or coils encased in a silicone shell, these rods are implanted directly into the penis, maintaining it in a constant erect state. This option is particularly suited for individuals who might find the mechanics of a pump challenging due to manual dexterity issues.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PENILE IMPLANT

It’s important to note that neither option interferes with the capacity for orgasm or ejaculation, preserving the essence of sexual pleasure. Getting used to the implant may require adjustment, but the result is a more spontaneous and fulfilling intimate life.

However, the decision to opt for a penile implant is significant, as it involves replacing much of the erectile tissue within the penis, thus eliminating the ability to achieve a natural erection. This path is typically considered when other treatments haven’t provided relief or have resulted in too many unwanted side effects.

IMPLANT PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY

Penile implant surgery is conducted on an outpatient basis, usually completed in about 60 minutes, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Managing discomfort post-surgery is usually done with a long-lasting injection in the scrotum to alleviate pain for the initial 48-72 hours. It is common for a mild ache to linger in the following days.

A recovery period of 6 weeks is recommended before physical and sexual activity is resumed.

For an IPP, your doctor may recommend inflating and deflating the device between the third and sixth week. This practice is designed to familiarize you with the mechanics and gently stretch the tissues around the cylinders, making the device more comfortable and easier to use.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

Although complications are rare, there are some risks to consider, as with any surgical procedure. Possible complications may include:

  • Mechanical failure
  • Infection
  • Incorrect sizing
  • Reservoir migration

FAQs

Will the IPP affect sensation or orgasm?

No, the IPP does not affect sensation or the ability to achieve orgasm. Its function is exclusively mechanical, as it facilitates getting and maintaining an erection.

How noticeable is the device?

Penile implants are designed with discretion and comfort in mind, ensuring that when the device is deflated, it remains unnoticeable and does not alter one’s physical appearance or activities. The implant, particularly the inflatable type, is engineered to conform to the body’s natural contours, making it invisible under clothing. Although the pump component located within the scrotum can be felt, it is not visible.

Can the IPP be removed if I change my mind?

Yes, the device can be surgically removed if necessary. However, this decision should be carefully considered, as removal can affect erectile function.
